My Fitness Journey
By Lynn M.
As a kid, I was active and never worried about what I ate, how I looked or how I felt. And I was very healthy. Even after my own children were born, I snapped back to a reasonably good shape; I never gave my health much thought. But when I was nearing my 50th birthday I realized I needed to do something to stop the decline, or else I was going to be fat and flabby at 50 rather than fit and flexiblel. Well, 50 came and went, and I did nothing to stop the weight gain and muscle atrophy. And then, my two granddaughters were born, and they gave me the incentive to finally get serious about getting healthy. I got a membership at Club Fitness and was assigned a trainer, Jevon Berry. Wow, has that made all the difference in my fitness level!
I remember my first session with JB in October of 2016 when he asked me what my fitness goals were. Goals? I never gave goals a thought So I just said the obvious and didn’t really believe that it would make any difference if I had a goal; but JB cared, and he knew the importance of having fitness goals. Now I realize that goals are a crucial component of becoming healthy. Short of doing the exercises for me, JB has done everything in his power to help me achieve my goals of getting stronger, developing stamina, and increasing flexibility.
After 10 very long minutes warming up on the treadmill, the first exercise JB taught me to do was a squat. I thought, how hard could a squat be? I took ballet lessons for 10 years as a kid; I knew how to do a plie – Wasn’t that the same thing as a squat? NO!! After much groaning and Oh my goshing, I completed 5 whole squats and felt like I had climbed Mt. Everest. How was I ever going to get to my fitness goals if I couldn’t even complete 5 squats without grunts and groans?!?!? Gradually, JB encouraged, cajoled, and pushed me to where I am today: 50 to 100 squats per session, countless seconds of planks, and bridges, presses and lifts OH MY!!!!
Now, 15 months into a lifestyle change that is anchored with regular JB workouts, I can measure my progress in inches, pounds, percentages, and best of all, unconventional measures, too! I have enough stamina to give piggyback rides to granddaughters and climb up and down playground equipment without huffing and puffing. I have enough strength to hoist 40 lb. bags of dog food from the store shelf into my cart then into my car and then into the house without using a wheeled trolley. I have the flexibility to buy, load, unload and spread dozens of bags of mulch in my garden without straining my lower back! And here’s a crazy accomplishment -even my shoes are loose on my thinner feet
At some point in this journey, it dawned on me that I was going to have to continue exercising for the rest of my life! Duh! This is not just a fad or a craze – it’s a lifestyle change that I must remain committed to. With JB at my side, I think I can actually see myself working out for years to come. In fact, I’m almost ready to say that I enjoy exercising!! One thing’s for sure, I enjoy working out with JB as my coach and friend. His skills as a personal trainer together with his effervescent personality make it possible for me to strive toward my goals.
